About this collection

Edward M. “Mel” McFarland, born in Colorado Springs in 1944, is a fourth generation native who has been researching, teaching, and writing about Colorado Springs and Front Range history for more than 40 years. An Air Force veteran, a middle-school teacher, and author of numerous articles and books on the topic of railroads, Mel is also a collector of historic photographs. The McFarland Photograph Collection is an eclectic mix of images of historic structures ranging from the second Antler’s Hotel in the 1930s to the construction of Camp Carson in 1942 as well as other interesting scenes around the Pikes Peak region.
