"6224-Weird forms of eroded rocks , the "Dutch Wedding ", Garden of the Gods , Colorado . Copyright Strohmeyer & Wyman. " printed on bottom of card . Text on back of card reads "6224 . Geography.--We are in the Garden of the Gods some six miles northwest of Colorado Springs , at the foot of the Rocky Mountain range . Seventy-five miles to the north is Denver . Physiography.--Geology.--Do you wonder that the wandering Indian , in the days when this western wonderland was his undisputed possession , held this spot sacred to the Great Spirit ? What are to us merely fantastic rock formations , worn by weathering and erosion into grotesque representation of living beings , were to them images of divinities . At the echoing cave he thought he heard the voice of the Great Spirit . The 480 acres of this natural park are crowded with such creations as these flat-hatted figures . They are, for the most part , of white and red sandstone , rocks sedimentary in their origin , but which have been upturned by some remote volcanic activity , until the strata run in the most unexpected directions . The same disturbance doubtless upheaved the igneous rocks of the foothills and the granite mass of overshadowing Pikes Peak itself . Literature.--The Garden of the Gods is a curious whim of nature . These wind-wrought obelisks startle one with their illusive resemblances , and awe one , as well , with their revelations of the gigantic forces that were once set loose here in the earlier days of world-making . No one has so well described this part of Colorado as Helen Jackson in her *Bits of Travel at Home* . Refer again to this view when considering Nature Study.
