The brothers were born in Kansas to William and Elizabeth Seymour, both former slaves from Kentucky. After a several years in Lawrence, Kansas, the family moved in 1889 to Falcon, Colorado in El Paso County. The family ranched in the Falcon area for around 30 years, then relocated to Colorado Springs in 1919. Elder and Luther talk about life on the ranch near Falcon, work they did in Colorado Springs, including helping build the second Antlers Hotel, helping build the brick tower and the tuberculosis ward at St. Francis Hospital and working at the coal mines in Colorado Springs. Luther tells the story of an accident during construction at the St. Francis Hospital in which he and another man fell more than three stories, suffering severe injuries. They discuss other early African American families in Colorado Springs and describe what the town was like in earlier decades. Luther describes baptisms that used to occur in Prospect Lake. |
