Description
A U.S. Air Force B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber burns after making a crash-landing just northeast of Patty Jewett golf course following departure from Peterson Field. All ten crew members made it safely out of the wreck and pilot Captain E.J. Cook was credited with sparing the Bonnyville neighborhood of Colorado Springs from damage by managing to land in an open field. See the November 5, 1948 edition of the Colorado Springs Gazette, page 1 for details. This crash-landing occurred less than a month after another Strategic Air Command B-29 attempting to land at Peterson Field crash-landed on Banning-Lewis Ranch property a mile east of the runway, starting a fire that burned over 600 acres of grassland. All 12 crew members escaped uninjured from this October 8 incident.
