The Old (McShane’s) Fort Plaque

Details

Image Number006-407DateSummer 1976DescriptionHistorical plaque dedicated to the "Old Stone Fort" located in Monument, Colorado. The fort was built at the pioneer home of David McShane to defend settlers against Arapahoe and Cheyenne raids between 1865 and 1868. The plaque lists 15 pioneer families of the Upper Monument Valley who used the fort for refuge. The marker was erected in 1950 by the State Historical Society of Colorado and local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and is located on Davidson Street just south of Highway 105, indicating the site of the original structure was 610 feet south of the plaque. The little house stood until the 1990s and there are still remnants of the fort’s foundation and house, however, they are not accessible as they are on private property, which should be respected.
