Image Number006-464DateSummer 1976DescriptionView of mission style ranch house at Turkey Creek Ranch showing porches and yard. Spencer Penrose purchased the Turkey Creek Ranch near Colorado Springs in 1912. Penrose became a local ranching leader through his raising of purebred Holsteins and exotic sheep here. He also kept wild animal, some of which became the basis for his Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Local architects MacLaren and Thomas designed the Spanish Revival style residence and numerous outbuildings at the ranch in 1912-1913. Much of the stone used on the first story of the Broadmoor Hotel exterior came from this ranch. The land was acquired by Fort Carson in 1965.
