Fountain Livery Stable

Details

Image Number006-510DateSummer 1976DescriptionThe Fountain Livery Stable, a stone building located at Race and Missouri Street, was built in 1886 as a livery stable for the first hotel in Fountain. The building was constructed of rock hauled by team and wagon from eastern Colorado. The 12-inch-thick walls were likely intended to prevent fire and keep horses safe. The 30 x 32-foot building has six windows protected by bars and a cupola on top for ventilation. Large double doors open from the roof for hay storage, and one mammoth wooden door is mounted at ground level. The braces for the door create an interesting geometric design. Photo is referenced as "A-8" in "Historic Sites & Structures El Paso County, Colorado" by Freed, Elaine and David Barber. [Researcher' note: address of structure was 217 W. Missouri Avenue in 2024.]PhotographerGulliford, AndrewLocationEl Paso County (Colo.)SubjectStablesStone buildingsHistoric buildingsLiveryCollectionHistoric Sites and StructuresPublisherPikes Peak Library DistrictOriginal FormatNegativesPhysical Description35mm b&w negative
