Teachout Ranch Barn Ruins

Details

Image Number006-662DateSummer 1976DescriptionRuins of the stone walls of the Teachout Ranch barn located between railroad tracks and Monument Creek approximately 3500 feet north of the Edmonson Trail Head parking lot (250 E. Woodmen Road), 400 feet east of the New Santa Fe Regional Trail and 450 feet west of 7532 Jenkin Place. In the spring of 1868 Harlow Teachout took up a homestead in the Woodmen Valley building a cabin, stone barn and stone icehouse. The stone ruins of the walls of the two latter structures are still visible. The ranch was a stage stop on the Pueblo-to-Denver run. Late in 1868 the Teachouts built Edgerton House, an inn for transients that had a dining room and eight upstairs bedrooms. General Palmer stayed there occasionally during the construction of his new railroad, the Denver and Rio Grande. In the 1870s Teachout’s boarding house became a summer hospital for a small portion of the large population that streamed west to seek a cure for tuberculosis. As many as 200 tents could be seen around Edgerton House with the patients being served food from the kitchen there.
