Image Number006-844DateFall 1976DescriptionOne-room log cabin with a stone chimney built by William Burgess in the 1870s who lived in it through the 1920s. Located on the United States Air Force Academy and accessed by taking Community Center Drive to Capps Drive and then 1/4 mile northwest on the unpaved Burgess Lane from Auto Skills Shop. Erroneously known as “Capps Cabin”, it was also called the "Pioneer Cabin" during a period of dispute concerning its origins. The Burgess cabin is the oldest standing building on the Air Force Academy grounds. While they never lived in the cabin, the Leonard and May Ann Capps family homesteaded a short distance from this cabin and when the Air Force Academy stadium was built in 1961, 2 adult graves of the Capps family located near the 50-yard line of the football field were moved to an area adjacent to the cabin where it was officially named the “Pioneer Cemetery”.
