Image Number006-1061DateFall 1976DescriptionAngular single-story brick building located at 1001 Manitou Avenue at Ruxton Avenue featuring numerous tourist storefronts and advertising mounted on the roof. Storefronts include “2nd Story Books”, “Little Bear Trading Post”, “Manitou Merchandise Mart”, “Nori’s Indian Den” and “Reed’s Barnwood Crafts”. Billboards on the roof advertise “North Pole – Home of Santa’s Workshop” and “Iron Springs Chateau Melodrama”. The building was originally a saloon, built in the early 1890s by William Paulson (the owner of the Grand View Hotel). In the late 1890s it was the Buffalo Saloon, owned by Johnny Nolon, and named for a statue of a buffalo carved out of sandstone, which stood in front of the building. Circa 1901 another Manitou saloon owned by Nolon, previously known as the "Board of Trade", took the name "Buffalo Saloon", and this building was put to various other uses, including a restaurant, a curio shop, a linen shop, and a bingo hall.
