Image Number006-1082DateFall 1976DescriptionSymmetrical porches and dormers flanking a central, protruding bay enhance this modest frame duplex known as the Gillis House at 106 Ruxton Avenue, built in 1889. Details such as the clapboard first level, decorative fish-scale shingles, and bracketed second-story bay window in the central bay are typical of the many Manitou Springs houses built by Angus, Archibald, and James Gillis. A planing mill they built in 1888 supplied lumber and decorative trim for their many projects. This house is said to be a reproduction of their family home in Nova Scotia as Archibald and Angus Gillis built this duplex home for their families to live next to each other since their wives were sisters. See image 001-1387 for circa 1890 photo of this house with some of the Gillis family members standing outside.
