Image Number006-1130DateFall 1976DescriptionThe Barker House, located at 819 Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs, is a historic Queen Anne-style building established in 1881-1882 by Charles W. Barker, growing from a small 1872 structure called Pine Cottage into a prominent 110-room, 4-story resort hotel that featured the area's first hydraulic elevator. The building is a 4-story, U-shaped, wood-frame structure with Queen Anne features, including two towers and 23-bay windows. After losing the property due to debt in 1897, Barker remained the manager until his death in 1905, after which new owner Mr. Pollen renamed it the Navajo Hotel. After falling into disrepair and being condemned, the building was rehabilitated starting in 1979, eventually becoming a 48-unit residential apartment building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
