He was a distinguished mountaineer, author, professor, and World War II veteran, widely celebrated as the definitive chronicler of the Colorado Rockies. Robert authored the “Guide to the Colorado Mountains”, first published in 1952 in conjunction with the Colorado Mountain Club, considered the bible for Colorado hikers and climbers. Born in Colorado Springs, he earned his BA and MA from Colorado College. He went on to teach at the Fountain Valley School (where he taught rock climbing and served as "director of frivolity") and later became a beloved Professor of English at Colorado College. During World War II, Ormes took a hiatus from teaching to train elite troops as a mountaineering instructor at Camp Hale in Colorado with the 10th Mountain Division.
