He begins his interview by talking about his early life in Sterling and Rock Falls, Illinois, where he lived until he was 17. Doctors urged his father to move to Colorado for health reasons. Buell left Sterling around 1910 on an immigrant train, followed by his parents and siblings, homesteading on the plains near Haswell, Kiowa County, Colorado. He describes homesteading, cattle ranching and farming there and describes how beautiful he felt the prairie was. He attended the Agricultural College of Colorado at Fort Collins and eventually became a banker in Ordway, Colorado. His family moved to the Ordway, Crowley County area around 1920, where he still was living at the time of the interview. He talks about sugar beet farming in the Ordway and Sugar City area and the influence of Russian German farmers who came to Sugar City to grow sugar beets around 1901. He also talks about the development and bust of the cantaloupe industry in Ordway.
