The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone, in connection with their most unique setting of rushing water, chiseled rocks, elaborate color, rich vegetation, and azure skies, are declared by good judges to constitute the grandest and at the same time the most picturesque and soul-flling bit of scenery in the world. Here a large river of clear, dancing wter plunges 326 feet down into a canyon whose wonderfully chiselled walls are more gorgeous in coloring than the walls of any other canyon or rocky surface on the globe. The lower third of the descending column of water is concealed behind a great cloud of spray; but the deep-toned thunders of the plunging torrent are heard for miles around. The river above the falls runs in a canyon already deep and beautiful, but at the foot of the great cataract the canyon is a thousand feet below the eye of the beholder, and the wonders of carving and coloring in the walls are a hundredfold more astonishing than the exhibitions of color and form above the falls. This great cataract and the canyon into which it plunges have been the inspiring theme of many artists, poets, and experienced travelers; but all admit that art and literature are powerless here. No verbal description can do the subject justice; nor can all the colors that artists combine and apply with skillful hands equal the rare colors, shades and tints that are here combined by the highest powers of the Creator.
