A front-page article of the Colorado Springs Gazette newspaper of September 11, 1911 provided the following information, abbreviated for this description: "Aged pioneer is dead in California"/Francis B. Hill succumbs to heart trouble/Internment in Colorado Springs/Had Lived Here 34 Years/Was Prominent in Business Life of the Community/ Leaves Large Estate/ Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1837. He was educated in Edinburgh University. He then travelled to Africa and was in the diamond mining business in Kimberly and in sheep and cattle raising in Natal. He came to Colorado Springs in 1877 and bought the Kennedy sheep ranch. 100 acres of that land was sold in 1888 to the Falcon Land and Town Company to develop what is now known as the town of Falcon, east of Colorado Springs. The rest of the property was sold in 1902. He also was one of the founders of All Souls Unitarian Church 20 years ago. He was the first president of the Board of Trustees, holding this office for 12 years, and was not only one of the largest contributors toward the building of the church, but is said to have been the largest subscriber toward its support. His wife, Alice Stewart Hill was an artist who died before he did in in Danville, N.Y. His home in the Springs was at 2 E. Bijou St. He left much wealth from banking and real estate enterprises upon his death. He was a promoter for the humane treatment of animals. He promoted bringing electricity to the city and was a trustee for the library.
