Collection NumberMSS 0058DescriptionIn the spring of 1890, the Reverend Samuel A. Eliot, a son of Charles W. Eliot of Harvard University, came to Colorado Springs from Denver to preach in the First Congregational Church. Although liberal services had been held before in Colorado Springs, the All Souls Unitarian church dates its start from the visit of Dr. Eliot. Shortly after his visit, a group of liberal-minded people organized the church as we know it today.

On October 7, 1890, a reception was held at the first Antlers hotel for the Reverend and Mrs. W. R. G. Mellen of Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Mr. Mellen soon became the first minister of All Souls. The church first met in Weber Hall at the corner of Weber and Kiowa Streets but soon moved its meeting place to the Antlers Pavilion, or Annex. The organization of the church was completed on February 25, 1891.

Plans were soon made to build a church, and the cornerstone of the present building was laid on July 2, 1892, by Mr. Mellen. Dr. Rev. James B. Gregg of the First Congregational Church and Dr. Montague of the First Baptist Church participated in the service. The church was formally dedicated on January 8, 1893.
