Collection NumberMSS 0040DescriptionWalter Raymond “Ray” Parnham was born in 1888 in Iowa and died in 1964. After moving to Colorado Springs in 1908, Ray worked as a chauffeur, machinist and mechanic. From at least 1916 to 1920 he was a vocational teacher at Colorado Springs High School where he taught shop classes and auto repair. During World War I Ray served as a 2nd lieutenant in the engineer branch of the Colorado National Guard. In the late 1920s he opened Parnham’s Brake Repair Service, which by 1929 became Ray’s Raybestos Brake Service Inc. and was located at 121 N. Nevada Avenue, adjacent to Udick’s Firestone Tire Store. By 1934 his business had closed. Throughout his life, he taught safe driving classes and was involved with AAA's Safe Driving Road Test.
