Collection NumberMSS 0378DescriptionThe Waldo Canyon Fire Collection brings together documents, reports, press releases, photographs, videos, and oral histories generated as a result of the destructive Waldo Canyon Fire, which caused extensive damage in Colorado Springs, Colorado during June and July 2012. A large number of municipal, county, state and federal agencies were involved in battling the Waldo Canyon Fire and dealing with its aftermath, and are represented in the collection.
The Waldo Canyon Fire began as a wildfire in the Pike National Forest about four miles northwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, on June 23, 2012. The fire quickly grew, fueled by very dry conditions, hot temperatures and high winds. On June 26, unusually strong winds blew the fire into northeastern Colorado Springs where nearly 30,000 residents were evacuated in the late afternoon. As the fire burned into the night, 347 homes were destroyed and two residents lost their lives. By the time the fire was 100 percent contained, on July 10, it had burned 18,247 acres and had caused an estimated $350 million damage.CollectionOral Histories
