Conley talks about coming to Colorado Springs on the train in 1930 to look for work. He found work on a ranch east of Castle Rock, Colorado. In 1939 he began farming for himself and in 1952 he acquired 560 acres. He started working for Elbert County in 1953. Conley talks about financial difficulties of establishing his own farm. He talks about farming in Elbert County, including plowing the adobe ground, raising corn, wheat and barley, everyday life on the farm, and how farm life has changed in the 1970s compared to earlier times. He discusses how he and his family weathered some of the bad storms that have affected the Bijou Basin area of Colorado.
