Mrs. Buell was born in Longmont, Colorado received her teaching degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1929, and spent her professional career as a teacher and school principal in Ordway, Colorado. She married Fred Buell in 1935. She talks about her maternal grandfather, Albert E. Titus, who came to Colorado in 1858 as a Wells Fargo agent to Golden, Colorado. With the advent of the railroad he became the Union Pacific agent in Golden. Later he and his brother freighted lumber to the mining camps. He owned grocery stores in Boulder and Georgetown. She discusses her paternal grandfather, Ezra G. Slifer, who also was a freighter. She talks about early settlers' encounters with Indians on the plains. Slifer came with the Burlington Colony (Chicago-Colorado Colony), a group from Illinois who formed an agricultural colony on the St. Vrain River, in what is now Longmont, Colorado. Mrs. Buell discusses her family's involvement with the colony. After college Mrs. Buell began teaching in Ordway, Colorado because "jobs were scarce, you took what you could get." She taught for five years before getting married to Fred Buell. Her husband's father, Jeweitt Buell, homesteaded at Haswell, CO. She describes the Ordway area and her first reaction to seeing it. She describes the irrigation systems and agricultural activities in Ordway. Sugar beets and melons were the chief agricultural products. Alfalfa, cattle and sheep were other income producers.
