Higbee's father was a Spanish soldier who settled after the Spanish American War on a homestead in New Mexico, and her husband worked as a miner in Colorado until his death in 1949. Higbee describes cultural celebrations, her career in insurance and accounting, and her volunteer work as a probation officer. Manzanares shares her experiences with racism in school, her education and her practice as a lawyer.
