The steam locomotive float was described as follows: "The Rock Island railroad made an interesting display of a small engine built of sheet iron and wood, which was carried on a long truck, trimmed in sunflowers and golden rod. The engine was complete in every detail and was on its own rails. The cab was manned by two boys and a real bell was kept ringing. The display was imported expressly for the occasion and it was a good advertisement for the company. It attracted more attention than any other feature." The women in the carriage were described as follows: "The rig that bore close inspection better than a great many and looked equally well at a distance was the one driven by Miss Scott of Philadelphia. Why it did not get a prize is a question that the judges must settle with their own consciences. The wheels were trimmed with sweet peas in heart designs and the same plan was followed out on the body of the vehicle. The ladies carried heart shaped fans trimmed with the fragrant peas. In the center rose a tall Maypole, trimmed in pink and white. Besides the peas, mountain sage and dahlias were very tastefully used. The ladies were dressed to match. They were, besides Miss Scott, Miss Monteith, Mrs. Douglas and Miss Annie Oates."
