Image Number001-8000Dateca. 1944DescriptionA military formation of U.S. Army Air Corps personnel consisting of three white men in the foreground [two colonels and a warrant officer] and numerous enlisted African-American men behind stand at attention in front of single-story temporary tar-paper-covered barracks buildings at Peterson Army Air Base. "T-607" is annotated on one of the buildings. The men are wearing patches on their khaki uniforms indicating they were assigned to the 2nd Air Force. Warrant Officer, junior grade [WOJG] Thomas Matthew Rouse, Jr. [1920-1991] is identified in the front right wearing sunglasses. Information provided by the Edward J. Peterson Air and Space Museum indicates that this is likely a unit photo of the 3rd Aviation Squadron which consisted of Black service members assigned to Peterson Field when 2nd Air Force operated one of its training bases here from June of 1943 to the end of World War II.
